Indio grew up around date gardens and a good deal of the city still sits alongside them. That gives the trees here two features you do not get further up the valley. There is almost no rain, and there is agriculture on the other side of the fence.

Three inches of rain a year changes the arithmetic

Indio receives something in the order of three inches of rain in an average year. In a wet climate rain flushes the soil, carrying salts and surplus fertilizer down past the roots. Here that never happens. Whatever goes into the ground stays in the ground, and it accumulates.

Two consequences follow. Irrigation water leaves its own salts behind, season after season, and a tree can end up growing in soil that has been quietly getting saltier for a decade. And a treatment applied to the soil does not wash out either, so applying something without knowing whether it is needed is not a neutral act here the way it might be somewhere wetter.

It is also why alkaline soil matters so much locally. Iron, manganese and zinc can be present in the ground and still be locked away from the tree. Feeding more of a nutrient the tree cannot take up achieves nothing and costs money.

Living next to an Indio date garden

Where housing meets a working date garden, insects move in both directions and so does everything on a pruning tool. A garden hedge that keeps getting reinfested after treatment is often being reinfested from over the wall, and no amount of spraying on your side of it will settle that.

This is worth knowing before you agree to a repeat treatment program. The right answer is sometimes to change what is planted, or to accept a level of pressure and manage it, rather than to spray on a calendar.

Fusarium wilt and the quarantine

Indio sits inside the area the state protects from Fusarium wilt of date palm. Under the state interior quarantine, palms of the genus Phoenix and their seed, and the saws and knives used to trim or prune them, cannot be brought in from the rest of California unless a plant quarantine officer has certified the tools as sterilized in an approved manner. Tools are named alongside the trees, because tools are how the disease actually travels.

The disease has no cure and is close to always fatal, so the whole of the defense is in what happens before a blade touches the palm. That is the reason for the rule, and the reason this valley has largely stayed clear of it. If a crew is quoting to work on your palms, ask what they sterilize between trees and when they last did it.

What a tree health assessment in Indio involves

Call quickly for a palm whose central spear pulls out, fronds dying in a wedge on one side of the crown, or a trunk that sounds hollow. Call at a normal pace for leaves that are pale between the veins, a canopy thinning year on year, or a hedge that comes back every season no matter what has been sprayed on it.
