Where the farms meet the gardens

Insects do not stop at a property line. A garden tree next to a grove is under a level of pressure that the same tree three miles away is not, and a treatment that would settle the problem in a suburban street can be undone within a season here by reinfestation from next door.

Understanding that changes the plan rather than abandoning it. Sometimes the sensible answer is to control the ants that are farming the sap feeders, or to accept a background level and treat when it crosses a threshold, rather than to spray repeatedly at something that keeps arriving. Sticky leaves and yellowing on Coachella citrus

Citrus is its own subject and it is the one Toni DiBernardo has followed longest, through the International Citrus Congress. Sticky leaves and black sooty mold on a citrus tree mean a sap feeder above them, and telling whitefly from scale from aphids decides what happens next. A broad spray is usually the wrong answer, because it kills the small parasitic wasps that were doing the work at no cost, and the following season is worse.

Yellowing between the veins on new growth is a different problem again and is usually about availability rather than absence. Alkaline soil here locks up iron and manganese even when a soil test says there is plenty.

A garden palm is not a crop palm

Where dates are grown commercially, palms are managed hard. They are climbed, stripped and worked to a production timetable, because the crop pays for it and the tree is a producing asset with a planned working life.

An ornamental palm in a garden is not that. It is not being asked to produce anything and it is meant to last, so the amount of frond removal that makes sense in a date garden is simply damage in a front yard. A palm cannot replace what is taken from it, and the food it lives on is made in the fronds you can see.

This is the commonest reason a garden palm here goes backwards after work rather than before it. When somebody quotes to tidy up your palms, the question worth asking is how much is coming off and what that is meant to fix.

What a tree health assessment in Coachella involves

Call quickly for a palm whose spear pulls out or a limb cracked over something you would mind losing. Call at a normal pace for citrus with sticky or blackened leaves, yellowing new growth, fruit dropping early, or a hedge that keeps coming back after treatment.
