
It usually starts with the car. You park under the same tree you've parked under for years, and one morning there's a sticky film on the windshield. Then the patio furniture. Then you look up and the leaves have gone dark, almost sooty, and when you brush past the plant a little cloud of white specks lifts off and settles back down.
That cloud is whitefly. The sticky stuff is honeydew, which is the polite word for what they leave behind after feeding on sap. The black coating is a mold growing on the honeydew.
Most people grab a spray at this point. Here's why that usually makes next summer worse.
How to tell whiteflies from scale insects
Flip a leaf over and look underneath. That's where they live, and the adults will fly up when you disturb them. Underneath you'll also find the young ones, which don't look like insects at all. They sit flat and still, like little scales.
That's where it gets confusing, because actual scale insects leave the same sticky honeydew and the same black mold. The difference is movement. Whitefly adults fly. Scale never does, at any stage, and you can scrape the bumps off with a fingernail.
One kind around here you won't mistake for anything else. Giant whitefly lays its eggs in white waxy spirals on the underside of the leaf, and the young spin long white filaments that hang straight down. UC calls it a bearded look. Those threads run two inches easy, and in a sheltered spot they've been measured past ten. It showed up in San Diego County in 1992 and worked its way inland. It goes after hibiscus, mulberry, bird of paradise, xylosma and citrus, which is most of what people plant around a pool out here.
How much of this actually hurts the tree
Less than it looks, usually.
A heavy population will yellow the leaves and drop some of them, and on a young tree or one that's already struggling, that matters. But UC says it straight: low levels of whiteflies aren't usually damaging, and the adults on their own don't do real harm unless they're carrying a disease.
The sooty mold is worth being clear about too. It isn't a disease of your plant and it can't infect the leaf. It's just growing on the sugar sitting on the surface, and it clears up once the honeydew stops. A thick layer does block light, so it isn't nothing, but it's a symptom, not the problem.
So on a mature tree that's otherwise healthy, most of what you're looking at is mess, not damage. That's worth knowing, because it changes what a sensible response looks like.
Why the spray backfires
Whiteflies have natural enemies out here, and the main ones are tiny parasitic wasps that lay their eggs inside the whitefly young. You'll never notice them. They're doing most of the work of keeping the numbers down.
A broad-spectrum insecticide kills those wasps. It kills a good share of the whiteflies too, so it looks like it worked. The problem is what happens next. Whiteflies breed a lot faster than the wasps do, so when they come back, they come back into a yard with nothing eating them. Round two is usually bigger than round one.
UC doesn't hedge on this. Their guidance on giant whitefly says insecticides aren't generally recommended because they kill the biological control agents, and that you shouldn't use them at all if beneficial insects are around. On whiteflies in general they point out that the insects build resistance fast and most products aren't very effective anyway.
There's a well documented case behind that advice. Ash whitefly showed up in California in the 1980s and tore through landscape trees. What ended it wasn't spraying. Researchers brought in a parasitic wasp, the whitefly populations crashed, and it's been a minor pest ever since. UC puts the value of that one program north of two hundred million dollars a year.
What actually gets rid of them
Water does more than people expect. A strong stream aimed at the undersides of the leaves knocks off the adults and the young, and UC recommends it once a week while the numbers are high, then every two or three weeks as they drop off. Costs nothing, and it doesn't touch the wasps.
Deal with the ants. Ants farm whiteflies for the honeydew, and they'll chase off the wasps and beetles that would otherwise be eating them. A line of ants running up the trunk means your natural control is being blocked, and stopping them is often the single most useful thing you can do.
Pull the worst leaves early. If you catch it while it's only a few leaves on one branch, taking those off can end it before it moves through the canopy.
Bag them, though, and get them off the property. This part matters more than it sounds. UC is blunt about it: if you leave infested cuttings sitting in the open, adults keep emerging from the mature nymphs and go start somewhere else in your yard. A pile of clippings by the side gate undoes the whole job.
Think about sun when you're replanting. Giant whitefly likes shade, so UC recommends putting susceptible species in full sun where you have the choice. That's free, it's permanent, and it's the kind of decision you only get to make once.
Keep the dust down where you can. Dust interferes with the small beneficial insects, and bare decomposed granite next to a dirt road is a rough place for them to work. Irrigated ground cover and something flowering nearby gives them somewhere to live.
And give it time. Biological control isn't instant. The wasps build up after the whiteflies do, so the worst of it comes before the turnaround. But the turnaround is real.
When it's worth having someone look
Call if the tree is dropping a lot of leaves instead of just looking dirty, if it's young or newly planted and losing ground, or if the same plant has been hit hard several years running. Repeated heavy infestations on one plant in an otherwise fine yard usually mean something else is wrong underneath, and the whitefly is taking advantage rather than causing it.
The other reason to call is just to find out what you're looking at. Whitefly, soft scale and aphids all leave sticky leaves and black mold, they call for different responses, and the difference is easy to see up close and impossible to see from the patio. Telling one sap feeder from another is most of what a tree doctor actually does.
