A tree that has been in the ground for thirty years cannot be bought. You can buy a young tree and a large box specimen, and neither of them is the thing that was removed. That gap is the reason a diagnosis is worth having, and it is the reason a removal quote deserves scrutiny in this city more than most.
A tree health assessment costs a small fraction of a removal and a smaller fraction of the tree. Sometimes it confirms the problem and the tree comes out anyway, which is a useful outcome as well, because then the decision was made on evidence.
Maintained landscapes run on schedules, not observations
Resort and club planting is looked after by crews working to a contract. Contracts specify frequency and tidiness, which is reasonable, but a schedule does not notice a canopy that is five percent thinner than last year. Slow decline is invisible to anyone who sees the tree every week.
That is where an outside look earns its money. We are not there to do the maintenance, so we are looking at the tree rather than at the job list.

The roots and the soil, before the leaves. Most of what kills established trees here is below ground or in the irrigation, and the canopy is where it shows up last. We want to know what changed at the base of the tree in the two seasons before the symptom appeared, because that is usually where the answer is.
On palms we look at the spear and the newest fronds, since a palm has a single growing point and its condition is the whole story.
What a tree health assessment in Indian Wells involves
Call quickly for a palm with a loose spear, a lean that has changed, or a limb cracked over a path or a terrace. Call at a normal pace for a specimen tree that is slowly going backwards, or a quote to remove something you would rather keep.
