Much of the planting on these lots went in decades ago, and a great many of those trees are now at or near the end of the life they were going to have in this climate. That produces a particular pattern of calls. Several trees on one property start to go at once, and it looks like something spreading.
Usually it is not. Trees planted in the same season, in the same soil, on the same irrigation, age at the same rate and arrive at their limit together. Telling that apart from an actual disease matters, because one of those situations calls for treatment and the other calls for a replacement plan over several years rather than all at once.
Old trees fail in a readable order
Decline in a mature tree usually shows at the top and the outside first, because those are the hardest places for it to push water to. Branches die one at a time rather than in a section. The canopy gets a little thinner every year and the annual growth at the tips gets shorter.
A section of canopy dying together, on the other hand, points at something specific, at the roots or in the trunk on that side. What the pattern looks like is most of the diagnosis, and it is why we want to see the whole tree rather than the branch somebody is worried about.
