Your Oleander Hedge Is Dying One Plant at a Time

Oleander is the workhorse of this valley. It's along the freeway, it's the divider between half the properties in the desert, and it survives things that kill everything else. So when a long oleander hedge starts going patchy, people tend to assume it's a watering problem and turn the valves up.

Sometimes that's right. Often it isn't, and the reason matters, because one of these you can fix and the other one you can't.

This disease was first noticed here

That's not a figure of speech. University of California's write-up says oleander leaf scorch was first noticed on oleanders in the Palm Springs-Indio area of Riverside County, and in Tustin, in the early 1990s.

So this valley isn't a place the disease spread to. It's one of the two places it was first seen in the state. If you've watched oleander hedges here go thin over the last thirty years, you've been watching the original outbreak.

The cause is a bacterium, Xylella fastidiosa. It gets into the plant's water-conducting tubes and plugs them. The plant then dies of thirst from the inside while sitting in wet soil, which is exactly why more water doesn't help.

The insect that carries it here is not the one you've heard of

Most coverage of Xylella talks about the glassy-winged sharpshooter. In this valley that's the wrong insect to be watching.

UC says plainly that in the Coachella Valley the smoke-tree sharpshooter is more abundant than the glassy-winged sharpshooter and is the most likely vector. Different insect, same job. It feeds on the plant's sap and moves the bacteria from one oleander to the next.

That's why the pattern is usually one plant, then its neighbor, then the one after that, rather than the whole hedge going at once.

How to tell it from thirst

There's a test anyone can run and it costs nothing but time.

Water it properly and wait. UC puts it simply. Unless the drought is severe, a thirsty plant recovers when watered. A plant with leaf scorch doesn't, because the bacteria have already plugged the plumbing. Water is going in at the bottom and it can't get to the top.

The shape of the damage is different too. Drought tends to yellow the whole plant fairly evenly. Scorch works from the tip and margins of the leaf inward, so you get a leaf with a burnt edge and a green middle. Salt damage is a third thing again, and it hits the older leaves first without the drooping.

The order of symptoms is worth knowing. Leaves yellow and start to droop first. Then the margins turn a deeper yellow or brown. Then the leaves die. It moves branch by branch through the plant rather than all at once.

The part nobody wants to hear

There's no known cure.

And pruning doesn't save it. UC is direct about this. Cutting out the part showing symptoms may help the appearance, but it won't save the plant. By the time you can see the damage, the bacteria are already through the vascular system. You're trimming a symptom.

An infected oleander declines and dies, usually within three to five years of the first symptoms. That's the honest timeline. It's slow enough that people keep hoping and keep spending on it, and fast enough that the hedge you're trying to save is going to have holes in it.

So what do you actually do

The useful decision isn't about the plant that's already sick. It's about the rest of the hedge.

Confirm what you're dealing with before you spend anything. Scorch, salt and drought all produce brown edges, and the responses are completely different. That's a five-minute look, not a project.

Plan replacements rather than treatments. If a hedge is a few years into this, you're going to be replacing plants either way. Doing it deliberately, a section at a time, gets you a hedge that still looks like a hedge. Doing it reactively gets you gaps.

Think about what goes back in. Replanting oleander into a hedge where the disease is active and the insect that spreads it is present puts a new plant in front of the same problem. There are other options for a screen here, and that's a conversation worth having before the shovel comes out rather than after.

And don't move infected cuttings around the property. Same principle as anything else. Bag them and get them out.

One more thing to watch

Oleander isn't the only plant Xylella affects, and UC notes that only a few species have been tested, so it's possible others carry it too. If you have a mixed screen and more than one kind of plant is going the same way, that's worth mentioning when you call. It changes what we look at.

When it's worth having someone look

Call if a hedge is thinning plant by plant rather than evenly, if watering more made no difference over a few weeks, or if you're about to replace a run of oleander and want to know whether putting oleander back is throwing money away.

If you have a long oleander screen in this valley and it's going backwards, find out which of the three problems it is before you spend on any of them. Two of them you can fix. One of them you can only plan around.
