The Cove is not the same growing site as the rest of La Quinta
Up against the Santa Rosa Mountains the soil is shallow, stony and fast draining, and in places it is decomposed granite over rock. Water goes straight through it. A watering schedule that keeps a tree comfortable on the flatter ground north of the highway can leave the same species in the Cove permanently short, because the water is past the root zone before the tree has taken any of it.
The rock does something else too. Boulders, block walls and paving hold heat and throw it back, so a tree in the Cove is living in a warmer and drier microclimate than the air temperature suggests. The first thing we look at here is where the water actually goes, not what the timer says.
Sunburned bark is the start of two other problems
A trunk facing southwest in La Quinta takes an amount of direct afternoon sun that trees from almost anywhere else never see. When a canopy is thinned, whether by pruning or by decline, bark that has spent its life in shade is suddenly exposed and it burns. The damage looks cosmetic and is not.
Damaged bark is the entry point for sooty canker and for flatheaded borers. Both of those get blamed for killing the tree when they arrived afterwards. This is the main reason we are careful about how much canopy comes off anything in June, and the reason we ask what a tree looked like the season before it started to fail.
Trees at PGA West and the other club landscapes
PGA West and the other club landscapes run on maintenance contracts, which means the trees are on a schedule rather than under observation. Problems get noticed when they are visible from the fairway, and by then a decline has usually been running for two or three seasons.
A written tree health assessment is useful in that setting for the same reason it is useful to an association. It puts a cause and a timeline on paper, so the decision to treat or to replace is made on evidence rather than on whoever spoke last.
