A very large share of the trees in Palm Desert are under shared ownership. Is it your tree, or does the HOA own it
In a large share of Palm Desert calls the tree turns out to sit on association land, or on the boundary, or in a common area maintained under a landscape contract that already covers it. People have paid for treatment on trees they did not own, and associations have removed trees a resident would have paid to save.
It is worth five minutes with the plat or the CC&Rs before anything else happens. If the tree is shared, a written assessment is also the document that settles the argument, because it says what is actually wrong rather than what somebody thinks.

Turf wants a short soak every day. A tree wants a long soak every week or two, reaching well below the grass roots. When a tree stands in irrigated lawn it gets the lawn schedule, and its roots stay in the top few inches of soil where the water is. That works until the first serious heat, and then the canopy thins from the top down.
Nothing about that looks like an irrigation problem. It looks like disease, and it gets sprayed. We check the soil profile and the emitter layout before anything goes in a tank, because if this is the cause then treatment is money spent on the wrong thing.
The palms along the streets and the fairways
Mature Washingtonia, date palms and Canary Island date palms carry most of the city character and most of the risk. A crown that is thinning evenly, one that is thinning on one side, a trunk that narrows near the top and a central spear that pulls out easily mean four different things, and only one of them is an emergency.
Skinning and heavy frond removal are cosmetic decisions with real consequences. A palm cannot regrow a frond that has been cut off and it has only one growing point, so every green frond taken is capacity it does not get back. When someone quotes to work on a palm here, the useful question is what the work is meant to fix.
What a tree health assessment in Palm Desert involves
Call quickly for a palm whose spear pulls out, a fresh lean with soil lifting on one side, or a large cracked limb over a walkway or a parked car. Call at a normal pace for a canopy that thins a little more each year, sticky or blackened leaves, or a removal quote on an association tree that you would like looked at before the board votes on it.
